Hangul Combo IME
This page introduces a Hangul Combo IME schema designed and produced by the site owner using rime platform. The schema files can be downloaded from the download page of this website; the suppporting font MetaHan Myungjo can be downloaded by clicking here.
Basic Keys
The IME uses standard 26 keys, and the keyboard is divided into three areas: the left part is for Leading Jamos, the middle part is for Trailing Jamos, and the right part is for Vowel Jamos. A valid keystroke must include at least one Leading Jamo key and one Vowel Jamo key.

For letters or letter combinations that are not included in the basic keys, two keys needed to be pressed simultaneously to represent them. Therefore, for a valid syllable, up to six keys may be pressed simultaneously.
Compound Keys (Leading Jamo)
| Letter |
| Ref. | ② | ② | ② | ② | ② | ③ |
①Tense consonants are input by pressing the corresponding lax consonant key together with its adjacent key. It does not matter what letter the adjacent key actually represents when pressed independently.
②Aspirated consonants are in principle input by pressing the corresponding plain consonant key together with the key on the opposite side of the middle row. It does not matter what letter the opposite key actually represents when pressed independently. However, this would cause both ㅌ and ㅊ to be mapped to ㄷ+ㅈ. Since ㅅ has no corresponding aspirated consonant, the key combination ㅅ+ㄷ would remain unused. To make use of this idle combination, it is assigned to represent ㅊ. In addition, ㅎ can be directly regarded as the aspirated counterpart of ㅇ.
③Leading Jamos have to be pressed with the left hand in all cases, but most key combinations are awkward to press simultaneously with one hand, so there are not many practically usable combinations. From the few remaining comfortable combinations, ㅁ+ㅈ was chosen to represent ㄹ. This assignment has no basis in the graphic logic and must be memorized as a special case.
Compound Keys (Trailing Jamo)
| Ref. | ⑤ | ⑤ | ⑤ | ⑤ | ⑤ | ⑤ | ⑤ |
| Letter |
| Ref. | ⑥ | ⑥ | ⑥ | ⑦ |
④For Trailing Jamos that are shared with Leading Jamos, the key combination rules are the same as those for Leading Jamos.
⑤For a Trailing Jamo cluster where both components are letters on the basic keys, the key combination is simply the combination of those two keys.
⑥Considering that ㅌ is a derived letter from ㄷ and ㅎ is a derived letter from ㅇ, when ㅌ or ㅎ appears in a Trailing Jamo cluster, they are directly treated as ㄷ or ㅇ respectively. The key combination rules are the same as above.
⑦The Trailing Jamo area has one more key than the Leading Jamo area, which is assigned to the most frequently used ㄹ. In this case, the key combination ㅁ+ㅈ no longer represents ㄹ, so it is instead used for the remaining ㄿ, which cannot be covered by all the rules above.
Compound Keys (Vowel Jamo)
Vowel Jamos are divided into masculine ones and feminine ones according to vowel harmony, and the key rules of the two groups of letters are completely symmetrical.
| Ref. | ⑧ | ⑧ | ⑧ | ⑨ | ⑨ | ⑨ | ⑩ |
⑧Vowel Jamos beginning with the semi-vowel [j] are input using the combination of ㅣ and the corresponding main vowel.
⑨For a Vowel Jamo cluster composed of two parts, if the combination of the basic keys corresponding to those two parts is unoccupied, the combination of those two keys is used directly.
⑩Vowel Jamos have to be pressed with the right hand in all cases, and are also constrained by the symmetry of vowel harmony. As a result, most key combinations are awkward to press simultaneously with one hand, and there are not many practically usable combinations. For this reason, it was decided to represent ㅚ/ㅟ with the combinations of ㅏ/ㅓ and ㅐ/ㅔ.
